About Company

The Rössing Uranium Mine, situated in Namibia’s Namib Desert near Arandis, stands as one of the world’s longest-operating and largest open-pit uranium mines. Its history stretches back to the discovery of uranium in 1928, with operations commencing in 1976. This mine has significantly contributed to Namibia’s position as a major uranium exporter. The scale of the operation is immense, involving the extraction and processing of vast quantities of low-grade ore to produce uranium oxide, a crucial component for nuclear fuel.

Ownership of the Rössing mine has evolved over time, with China National Uranium Corporation (CNUC) now holding a majority stake. Notably, the mine’s history includes a period of controversy due to past partial ownership by Iran. Beyond its economic contributions, the mine faces ongoing considerations regarding its environmental impact, including concerns about potential contamination and the management of its large tailings storage facility. Rössing Uranium continues to be a significant player in the global uranium market, while also navigating the complexities of sustainable mining practices.
