Job Description

To lead a team of Foremen and Artisans in safely and accurately executing the project manager’s directives by delegating, supervising and correcting to ensure the highest level of workmanship and quality for satisfying the needs and requirements of our company and clients.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Staff Planning and Supervision

  • Ensure resources are managed within Project Manager quotes and forecasts without exceeding budget or timelines
  • Ensure foremen fully understand project requirements
  • Monitor and report any deviation from forecasts or budgets timeously
  • Assign, instruct, and lead the right people to the right tasks
  • Ensure foremen achieve daily objectives through effective planning, organisation, and supervision
  • Issue Annual Performance Agreements to Foremen and conduct interim KPI assessments
  • Monitor worker performance and advise foremen on performance management in line with company procedures
  • Manage disciplinary actions according to company standards and procedures
  • Provide regular mentorship and technical skills transfer to team members
  • Mobilise and demobilise personnel, equipment, and materials at job start-up and completion
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and effective people utilisation
  • Create a culture of accountability and consistency to deliver exceptional outcomes
  • Lead teams towards an inspiring future, enhancing engagement, resilience, and morale
  • Foster open communication to encourage creativity and innovation

Project Estimation and Execution

  • Ensure timesheets and reports are accurately completed and submitted on time to payroll
  • Prepare labour and material estimates in consultation with the Project Manager
  • Forecast labour hours and job durations
  • Control labour hours against forecasts
  • Control material usage on jobs
  • Report deviations from forecasts timeously
  • Report client-related issues to the Project Manager
  • Provide continuous and consistent job status and progress reporting
  • Manage variation orders and ensure work is not performed without prior authorisation
  • Conduct job feedback meetings to prevent recurrence of sub-standard performance

Productivity and Quality

  • Execute jobs within budgeted costs and allocated timeframes
  • Manage labour utilisation efficiently
  • Determine shift requirements to ensure adequate supervision
  • Manage short-time effectively
  • Control effective use of materials and tools
  • Provide technical support to Foremen and Artisans on customer requirements
  • Ensure employee output aligns with customer requirements
  • Apply correct skills to prevent rework
  • Ensure work meets required specifications and workmanship standards
  • Ensure labour, variations, and standby time are accurately recorded
  • Monitor labour hours against budgets and notify the Project Manager of deviations
  • Ensure accurate timekeeping and attendance records
  • Continuously update the Project Manager on progress
  • Complete jobs without non-conformances and within agreed deadlines

Health and Safety

  • Complete “5 Steps” safety task observations
  • Conduct site risk assessments with the team
  • Ensure safety incidents are reported, investigated, and corrective actions implemented
  • Conduct toolbox talks and safety meetings
  • Comply with company and client Health, Safety, and Environmental standards
  • Take responsibility for overall employee safety
  • Apply and promote good housekeeping practices

Ad hoc Duties

  • Provide job training and skills development to personnel
  • Attend to reasonable requests from the Line Manager within scope of work
  • Adhere to company quality standards and engineering best practices
  • Perform overtime work when required
  • Live the O&L Values and Persona
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures

Minimum Qualification & Experience Requirement:

  • Grade 12, National Trade Certificate
  • Advanced Diploma / 3-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7) in a related field
  • Minimum 6 years’ on-the-job experience in a ship repair/marine environment
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity
  • Quality Control experience
  • Familiarity with ISO standards
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office
  • Valid driver’s license
