Ongopolo Mining Limited
About Company
Ongopolo Mining Limited (now often referred to under the umbrella of its parent company, Weatherly Mining Namibia) is a significant entity in the Namibian mining landscape, primarily centered around the historic copper-rich regions of Tsumeb. Founded in 2000 as a successor to the liquidated Tsumeb Corporation Limited (TCL), the company was established by former employees and local trade unions in an ambitious effort to revive the nation’s copper industry. However, following a period of financial instability, it was acquired in 2006 by the British-based Weatherly International PLC, which restructured the operations into Weatherly Mining Namibia
As of 2026, the company’s portfolio includes several key assets, most notably the Tschudi, Otjihase, and Matchless mines. While its famous Tsumeb smelter was sold to Dundee Precious Metals (and subsequently to Sinomine Resource Group in 2024), Ongopolo continues to focus on the extraction and processing of base metals. Recent efforts have centered on restarting operations at the Matchless and Otjihase mines under the management of Consolidated Copper Corp (CCC), which acquired a majority stake in 2023. These projects aim to utilize modern, electrified underground mining designs to tap into deep-seated copper deposits that remain vital to Namibia’s economic growth.
