Vacancy: Database Systems Administrator (C5)

Employer: MTC, Namibia’s leading telecommunications company Reports to: Senior Database Administrator

Job Competencies

• Design, implement, and secure databases while optimising performance, availability, integrity, and security.
• Map logical structures into physical databases on targeted DBMS products.
• Analyse application system requirements (database architecture, cloud infrastructure, OS, security).
• Validate data models and assess future storage requirements.
• Install and configure database systems with vendors for optimal performance.
• Configure production/test databases and ensure backups during upgrades.
• Stay updated with emerging database technologies and apply improvements.
• Conduct performance tuning and deploy robust tools for availability and integrity.
• Review database user access matrix and permissions.
• Monitor DBMS performance and collect statistical usage data.
• Proactively monitor logs and maximise uptime.
• Implement encryption mechanisms for data at rest/in transit.
• Apply object-level security (GRANT, REVOKE, DENY).
• Identify and escalate breaches to Senior Database Administrator.
• Submit audit trail reports and implement auditor recommendations.
• Implement disaster recovery strategies and execute test emergency plans.
• Review backup/replication/recovery tools for effectiveness.
• Resolve faults and data loss.
• Optimise performance by evaluating new technologies.
• Perform regular tests to ensure data security, privacy, and integrity.
• Automate availability/performance/utilisation reports.
• Research and recommend emerging database technologies.

Qualifications and Personal Competencies

• Bachelor’s Degree in IT, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related.
• Backup solutions or Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) required.
• Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) or ITIL Foundation advantageous.
• 3 years’ experience in database installation and administration.
• 2 years’ experience with storage and virtual infrastructure administration.
• 2 years’ experience with various database environments (OS and hardware).
• Knowledge of Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB.
• Experience with SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL, JDBC, plus scripting (Python, Perl, etc.).
• Skills in systems engineering, operations, and performance analysis.
• Strong troubleshooting skills with attention to detail.
• Interpersonal skills to assist non-technical individuals.
• Experience in data modelling, schema design, and normalisation.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Namibian citizenship or permanent residency required.
