Veterinary Position – Specialist in Feline Coronavirus and FIP Management

Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced veterinarian to join our team at CCF, specializing in
the diagnosis and management of Feline Coronavirus and FIP in cheetahs. This role is integral to
the care of rescued cheetahs, including the Northeast African (Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii),
Southern African (A. j. jubatus), and Asiatic (A. j. raineyi) subspecies, all victims of wildlife
trafficking or human-wildlife conflict. A strong research interest is essential, as the position involves
both clinical work and participation in CCF’s research and outreach initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Care and Diagnostics
o Perform advanced diagnostics, including testing and interpretation for Feline
Coronavirus and FIP.
o Manage FIP treatment using experimental and innovative approaches, ensuring
optimal outcomes for the animals.
o Provide emergency care for rescue cheetahs and other big cats.
2. Veterinary Operations
o Oversee preventative and routine health care programs for resident cheetahs and
domestic animals, including livestock guarding dogs, goats, sheep, cattle, and
horses.
o Manage clinical equipment, including hematology and biochemistry analyzers,
portable x-ray, and ultrasound machines.
o Maintain the clinic, including inventory management, hygiene, and supervision of
veterinary support staff.
o Plan and conduct bi-weekly health care meetings, ensuring effective
communication with animal care staff.
3. Husbandry and Rehabilitation
o Develop and implement long-term rehabilitation plans for rescued cheetahs
o Participate in hand-rearing young cubs during peak periods
o Collaborate with animal care staff to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation and
husbandry practices.
4. Education and Capacity Building
o Educate local veterinarians, veterinary students, and animal care staff on FIP
diagnostics, treatment protocols, and wildlife care.
o Engage with visitors and guests, providing insights into veterinary operations and
cheetah conservation efforts.
5. Research and Outreach
o Actively participate in ongoing veterinary research projects, focusing on FIP in
cheetahs and related feline diseases.
o Assist in maintaining and improving clinical databases and electronic medical
records.
o Contribute to community outreach programs, including livestock health initiatives
and rabies vaccination campaigns.
Candidate Requirements
• A minimum of 4 years of veterinary experience, with a focus on feline medicine and wildlife
care.
• Proven expertise in diagnosing and treating Feline Coronavirus and FIP in domestic and
exotic felids (minimum 2 years)
• Strong interest in cheetah conservation and experience with different cheetah subspecies
is highly desirable.
• Ability to work under challenging field conditions and adapt to a dynamic workload.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
