Job Description

Role Purpose

The Environmental Assistant will support the Environmental Officer with routine environmental monitoring, sampling, inspections, testing, data collection, and record keeping. The role will support environmental compliance and the implementation of environmental programmes at the mine.

Key Responsibilities

1. Environmental Monitoring & Testing

  • Conduct routine water sampling and basic environmental testing as instructed.
  • Assist with dust, noise, and other environmental monitoring activities.
  • Record results accurately and report abnormal results or observations to the Environmental Officer.

2. Environmental Inspections & Compliance Support

  • Conduct routine environmental inspections with the Environmental Officer.
  • Identify environmental risks, non-conformances, and areas requiring corrective action.
  • Assist with follow-up of environmental compliance actions.

3. Water, Waste & Pollution Control

  • Assist with monitoring water sources, drainage areas, and potential pollution points.
  • Support waste segregation, waste area inspections, and housekeeping checks.
  • Report spills, leaks, pollution incidents, and other environmental concerns promptly.

4. Environmental Data & Records

  • Maintain monitoring records, sampling logs, checklists, and environmental registers.
  • Assist with capturing and compiling environmental monitoring data.
  • Support preparation of routine environmental reports and submissions.

5. Environmental Programme Support

  • Assist with environmental projects, awareness activities, and site initiatives.
  • Support rehabilitation, erosion, vegetation, or other environmental activities as directed.
  • Work with operational departments to implement environmental controls.

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Health, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ relevant environmental experience.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental management principles, water quality monitoring and sampling, dust and noise monitoring support, waste management, spill and pollution controls, environmental inspections, environmental records, and applicable HSE requirements.

Added Advantage

  • Relevant Certificate in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, or a related field.
  • Experience in a mining or remote site environment.
  • Experience with routine water sampling, basic testing, environmental monitoring, and field inspections.
  • Exposure to environmental reporting and record keeping.

Skills & Competencies

  • Accurate sampling and recording ability.
  • Strong observation skills and basic data analysis ability.
  • Attention to detail, report writing, organisation, teamwork, and communication.
  • Technical competence in water sampling, basic testing, environmental monitoring, site inspections, waste management, pollution and spill controls, environmental records, and basic environmental reporting.
  • Integrity, reliability, accountability, willingness to learn, professionalism, and ability to work in the field.

Working Conditions

  • Remote mining environment.
  • Office, laboratory/monitoring areas, and field/site environment.
  • Routine movement across the mine/site for inspections, sampling, and monitoring.
  • Medium work and physical pressure.
