Role Purpose
The Health, Safety & Security Superintendent reports to the Health, Safety & Security Manager and is responsible for supporting the implementation, coordination, and oversight of HSS functions across Ongopolo Mining Limited Central Operations.
The role ensures compliance with legal and company requirements, promotes safe and secure working practices, and drives continuous improvement through monitoring, supervision, and proactive risk management.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement HSS policies, ISO 45001 requirements, and legal compliance across surface and underground operations.
- Advise management on HSS risks, compliance gaps, and improvement actions.
- Conduct inspections, audits, and FVLs to identify unsafe acts, conditions, and security risks, ensuring corrective actions are closed.
- Facilitate risk assessments and Permit‑to‑Work (PTW) processes for all mining activities.
- Lead incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness and response, including drills and stakeholder engagement.
- Manage HSS risk systems, security controls, and compliance data for continuous improvement.
- Deliver HSS training and awareness to strengthen safety and security culture.
- Compile HSS performance reports and support audits and regulatory compliance.
- Lead, coach, and develop HSS operations and maintenance teams to ensure consistent performance.
Education & Experience Requirements
- National Diploma in Safety Management or Occupational Health & Safety (NQF 6).
- Recognised Occupational Health & Safety certificate.
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in a mining environment, with proven underground mining HSS experience.
- Advanced First Aid certificate.
- Knowledge of underground ventilation, occupational health & safety systems, and mining legislation.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and HSS reporting systems.
