Overall Purpose of Position

The Stores Controller is responsible for coordinating and controlling all stores and warehouse activities to ensure the safe and efficient receipt, storage, preservation, issuing and recording of materials, equipment, spare parts and consumables.

The role is responsible for maintaining accurate inventory records, optimising stock levels, ensuring good housekeeping and supporting operational requirements through effective materials management.

Main Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the stores and warehouse.
  • Receive, inspect and verify incoming goods against purchase orders, delivery notes and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure materials, spare parts, tools and consumables are correctly identified, labelled, stored and preserved.
  • Issue materials and equipment against authorised requests and accurately record transactions on the ERP/stores management system.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and conduct stock counts, cycle counts and stock reconciliations.
  • Monitor stock levels and identify shortages, excess and obsolete stock.
  • Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies, damaged goods and incorrect deliveries.
  • Ensure appropriate storage conditions for equipment, spares, chemicals, lubricants and specialised materials.
  • Maintain a secure, organised and clean warehouse in accordance with company procedures and HSE requirements.
  • Supervise, train and provide guidance to stores personnel.
  • Prepare stores and inventory reports, including stock levels, variances, slow-moving items and relevant KPIs.
  • Liaise with Procurement, Maintenance, Engineering, Finance and other departments to ensure materials are available when required.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and support internal and external audits.
  • Promote a strong safety, housekeeping and continuous-improvement culture within the stores function.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 / NSSC or equivalent.
  • Diploma or Certificate in Stores Management, Inventory Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or a related field will be an advantage.
  • Minimum 10+ years’ experience in stores, warehouse or inventory control, preferably within a mining, construction or industrial environment.
  • Previous supervisory experience will be an advantage.
  • Experience working with an ERP or inventory management system.
  • Good knowledge of stock control, warehouse procedures and inventory management principles.
  • Good computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Excel and ERP systems.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Forklift licence/competency will be an advantage.
  • Strong organisational, administrative and stock-control skills.
  • Good communication, leadership, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, integrity and accountability.
  • Good understanding of occupational health and safety requirements.
